WordPress Sites and How they Work

WordPress Site Work

WordPress Sites use the most popular CMS (Content Management System) on the internet. WordPress started out as a Blogging platform but it isn’t just for Blogging anymore. WordPress is an Open Source website and blog building system powered by PHP and MySql. If you do not know what that means you are not alone. However you do not need to know how to work with PHP or MySql to use WordPress to build your site.

WordPress Blog or Web Site?

Normally a Website will have a home page that stays the same (static page) and a Blog will use the last post to the site as the home page. It is really easy to convert your WordPress blog to a Website by either making a post “Sticky” or by building your Home Page and setting it as your Static home page.

WordPress Sites Navigation

The navigational system is very simple. Most people use the Categories and Recent posts as the navigational system. WordPress is very simple to set up. There is a huge community of people that work with and on WordPress.

WordPress Themes

There are a lot of themes that you can use with WordPress. A Theme will change the look of the website, make it two column or three, change the colors. Themes mainly work on the look and feel of the site. They are very simple to load, and even simpler once you have loaded them to change from theme to theme.

There are thousands of free themes and several very powerful Professional Themes for sale.

Professional WordPress Themes

If I was working much on WordPress I would purchase one of the more famous Professional Themes. I would buy one that is used by a large group of people. It must have a good support forum.

You can check out the support forums before purchasing any of the better known Professional themes like Frugal and Thesis.

WordPress Plugins

WordPress allows you to load plugins directly into your website. These plugins can be free or you may pay for them. They are designed to do many different things, from helping with your SEO, to building a Membership site, to automatically adding Adsense to your site, and many other things. There are thousands of available plugins that will modify or add a cool feature to your website.

Here is a quote from WordPress.org about Plugins

“WordPress Plugin: A WordPress Plugin is a program, or a set of one or more functions, written in the PHP scripting language, that adds a specific set of features or services to the WordPress weblog, which can be seamlessly integrated with the weblog using access points and methods provided by the WordPress Plugin Application Program Interface (API)”

Free WordPress

WordPress is very easy to use and it is free. You will not have to pay to use the WordPress content management system. You will have to have pay for hosting and you will need to own a Domain to use WordPress on your own site.

Check out my article explaining Hosting vs Domain Names.

There is a huge community of users out there supporting it which is also one of the problems. There is so much information and so much conflicting information you may easily get Information Overload.

I have spent a couple of years building WordPress sites. I have definitely suffered from information overload in respect to WordPress because there is so much information available.

  1. Nice post. I learn something totally new and challenging on websites I stumbleupon on a daily basis. It will always be interesting to read through content from other writers and use something from their websites.
